Serve on the Board

The Dorcheat Historical Association & Museum, Inc. exists to preserve, interpret, and share the history of Webster Parish for present and future generations. Our work depends on committed volunteer leadership—and we are always interested in connecting with individuals who feel called to help steward this mission.

Serving on the Board of Directors is both an honor and a responsibility. Board members help ensure that the Museum remains financially sound, historically credible, and deeply connected to the community it serves.

Why Serve?

Board service offers the opportunity to:

  • Help safeguard local history, genealogy, and material culture

  • Shape the long-term vision and sustainability of the Museum

  • Support educational programs, exhibits, and preservation efforts

  • Strengthen community pride and civic responsibility

  • Apply your skills and experience in a meaningful, lasting way

Board members play a critical role in ensuring that our organization not only survives, but thrives.

What Board Members Do

The Board of Directors is responsible for the overall governance of the Dorcheat Historical Association & Museum.

This includes:

  • Upholding and advancing the mission of the organization

  • Providing fiduciary oversight, including budgeting and financial stewardship

  • Supporting fundraising efforts through personal giving, advocacy, and outreach

  • Participating in strategic planning and long-term decision-making

  • Serving as ambassadors for the Museum in the community

  • Working collaboratively with staff and volunteers

Board members are expected to approach their role thoughtfully, ethically, and with a genuine commitment to the organization’s success.

Time & Financial Commitment

Board service requires an ongoing commitment of time, attention, and resources.

Expectations include:

  • Regular attendance at board meetings and committee meetings

  • Preparation for meetings and active participation in discussions

  • A meaningful annual financial contribution, at a level personally significant to the board member

  • Willingness to assist with fundraising and donor cultivation

We value board members who are realistic about their capacity and who can fully engage in the responsibilities of governance.

Who We’re Looking For

We seek a diverse and thoughtful board that reflects the community we serve. Ideal candidates may bring experience or interest in areas such as:

  • Local or regional history

  • Genealogy and archival research

  • Museum work, education, or preservation

  • Finance, law, nonprofit management, or fundraising

  • Communications, marketing, or community engagement

  • Just as important as professional skills are integrity, curiosity, reliability, and a shared passion for preserving local history.

  •

  • The Board as Stewards

  • Board members are stewards of both tangible and intangible assets: historic collections, donor trust, institutional memory, and public confidence. Each director is expected to act in the best interest of the organization and to place the mission above personal interests.

  • Serving on the board means helping carry the Museum’s story forward—carefully, responsibly, and with vision.
